Frequently Asked Questions

Where will my massage or bodywork session take place?  217 Linda Vista Drive, Hendersonville, NC  We are located on the corner in the Healing Arts Cottage, across from Tractor Supply.  Our office is very accessible, and Emily is well trained in assisting those with impaired mobility if needed.

Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort

Must I be completely undressed?  You may undress to your level of comfort.  We will assure you are modestly draped throughout the session.  We usually uncover one body part at a time, but you are in control and may request we work through clothing or sheets.

Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?  No.  The practitioner will leave the room to allow you privacy, and will knock before reentering.  She will also explain the procedure to you upfront.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Will I be covered during the session?  Yes.  As stated previously, we will uncover only the part of the body being worked on.  You may request work be done through sheets or clothing.

What parts of my body will be massaged?   A full body massage usually includes head, back, and all extremities.  Abdominal massage is an option.  Abdominal massage is very soothing and can be helpful to facilitate elimination. Massage can be performed in any position, and we are glad to accommodate your greatest level of comfort.   We can avoid any body part you do not like touched, and/or we can focus on any body part you would prefer.

What will the massage or bodywork feel like?   Most massage promotes relaxation. It facilitates the release of endorphins, which are biochemicals which cause a feeling of euphoria or happiness.  Massage should feel good to your muscles. Good massage should not increase your pain.  It should be kept at a comfortable level, as you tolerate.  Sometimes we may need to work out tight areas or trigger points in order for those tissues to regain good circulation and improve function.  This can be uncomfortable, but ultimately you are in control.  We invite open communication about what you are feeling, and if you feel the massage is beneficial.

A relaxing Swedish massage is often a baseline for clients. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. The oil also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting.

Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?   There are many styles of massage and bodywork.  You may find certain styles are a better fit for you.  I perform relaxation (Swedish) massage and Neuromuscular trigger point release techniques.  I am also skilled in Myofascial release therapy.

What should I do during the massage or bodywork session?  This is your time.  If you feel like talking, fine!  If you want to relax and think or sleep, that is fine too.  I will follow your cues.  The most important part is to breathe deeply and enjoy the time you are gifting yourself.

How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session?  The goal is to feel better after massage.  Sometimes, clients may be a little sore after a session.  This usually happens when a person has not had much bodywork recently.  Soreness should resolve in a day or two.   You should never be in pain.

What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?  Massage can improve range of motion, decrease muscle tension and stress levels, It can improve perception of body image and reduce anxiety.  It can help to remedy headaches.  It facilitates production of endorphins and decreases the production of cortisol (stress hormone).  It helps manage chronic pain.   Healthy touch has been shown to be very important for our mental and physical health, in all ages of life.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?  It is important that we know about your medical status and the medications you are on.  If you are running a fever, have an acute infection, a contagious skin condition or systemic condition, massage is not advised.  If you have a serious chronic medical condition you may wish to clear massage with your medical doctor first.

Please alert the practitioner if you have a condition causing decreased sensation, bleeding or bruising precautions, or a condition or injury causing hypersensitivity of a body part.

Please do not attend massage sessions under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  We reserve the right to deny sessions under this circumstance.
